The next flagship from Sony is on its way, it seems and recent leaks suggest it’s going to be a great device with a knockout display and very intriguing cameras, for a start.
The latest rumors come from Weibo user Zackbucks, as spotted by Aaron Brown at express.co.uk . There are plenty of details in the leaks and they sound very impressive. Here’s what we know.
Two years ago, Sony launched the Sony Xperia 1 and last year followed up with the Sony Xperia 1 II. If you feel it’s a complicated name, you’re not alone. It’s because there are other phones, like the Xperia 5 and Xperia 10 in the range. Anyway, no surprise that it looks like the next model will be the Sony Xperia 1 III.
4K OLED Display
That’s also no surprise, as the first two Xperia 1 models had gleaming OLED screens, in the Sony-only aspect ratio of 21:9 – making it ideal for watching widescreen movies. That’s especially because it looks like we can expect a screen with 4K resolution, something that Sony has put on previous phones but almost no other manufacturer has attempted. It’s predicted to be a 6.5in display which matches last year’s screen, so it’s likely to have a high resolution of around 64 pixels per inch.
Fast refresh rate
The visual excellence will be enhanced by a 120Hz refresh rate, so scrolling through a menu list won’t judder or shake.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 888
The top-flight Qualcomm chip is going to power the Xperia 1 III, which should ensure a fast and glitch-free experience.
Sony’s phones often have sensationally good sensors (Sony makes camera sensors for other phone manufacturers as well as for itself) but it hasn’t made Sony’s phone the best photographically. That may change with the next phone. Its three cameras look likely to include a periscope camera for the first time in a Sony smartphone.
As you’ll know, a periscope camera sadly doesn’t mean something that smoothly levitates out of the body of the phone on your command. Instead, it makes a greater magnification possible by using a mirror to reflect the light inside the body of the phone. Where the Xperia 1 II had 3x zoom equivalent compared to the main sensor, we may see a bigger equivalent zoom, say 5x, this time.
Two more cameras
The rumor claims that the main camera will be a 64MP sensor while the ultra-wide lens will have a 12MP sensor.
Plenty of memory and storage
It’s likely there’ll be two versions, one with 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage, with a pricier model boasting 16GB of RAM and 512GB storage.
Sony traditionally likes to announce its new phones in the Spring, with it going on release in the weeks following. So, could there be an announcement in April for a May or June release?
More details as we have them.
